Brent Tor
Dartmoor's most famous silhouette
Brent Tor is unusual for many reasons; it’s a unique example of a tor made of basaltic lava as opposed to granite, but more famously the tor is surmounted by the Church of St Michael de Rupe (known colloquially as Brentor Church), which serves the parish of Brentor.
The church’s 40ft tower and position high atop a tor makes it visible from large sections of the national park and has surely made it the most iconic silhouette across the entirety of Dartmoor. The church has several legends surrounding it and was used as a filming location for the ITV adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s Jamaica Inn. For those wanting to visit, there’s a convenient car park nearby.
