Tavistock

A unique pannier market is just one reason to visit

The beautiful town of Tavistock is a key part of the West Devon and East Cornwall UNESCO World Heritage Site. The stannary town was a hub for Devon’s tin trade and is is famous for its pannier market, which draws tourists from up and down the country.

For around 150 years, The Market has been a top trading spot, where local folk would come for their local shopping every Friday. Now, it is thriving 5 days a week with variety, vibrance and excitement from stall owners, locals and visitors. It is so popular now that there are themed markets for each day it is open, from crafts to antiques to fresh produce.

Tavistock is ideally located on the edge of Dartmoor, offering easy access to Whitchurch Down where you will find the iconic ‘Pimple’, a Grade 2 listed gateway building to a now redundant reservoir. Tavistock is an ideal location for walkers looking to explore Dartmoor and the historic towns it encompasses. With an easy 15 minute stroll to the edge of Whitchurch Down, Tavistock offers a change of scene from the rambling moorland and wild Dartmoor ponies, where you will find a selection of spots for lunching and unique shops to browse.

The town is known for many things, one of the main attractions being the unique shopping experience it offers. Tavistock is truly a day out that the whole family can enjoy, offering an eclectic array of businesses and eateries to enjoy. From boutique fashion to Mediterranean delis, you will discover a friendly community of independent businesses, where shopping locally is a breath of fresh air from the main stream high street.

Tavistock also hosts a wealth of events throughout the year, including the renowned Goose Fair. Once a trading fair for live stock and a bustling social event in the 12th century, it has now transformed into a colourful, vibrant market and fair that everyone can enjoy! Market traders travel from all over the country to sell their goods and provide entertainment.

Tavistock is also know for its extremely popular event, Dickensian Evening. Operating for 35 years, it brings over 5000 visitors each year to enjoy Christmas themed stalls, late night shopping and of course the Christmas Light switch-on ceremony.

The historic town centre has a sprawling square with town hall, guildhall and old courthouse all built in the Perpendicular Gothic style. The fine choice of places to eat and independent shops keep visitors coming back for more and has become known for its unique and friendly charm.
