“ I have never before, in my long and eclectic career, been gifted with such an abundance of natural beauty as I experienced filming War Horse on Dartmoor.” Steven Spielberg.

Great Western Grill

An award-winning restaurant in Devon set within an iconic manor house hotel is relaunching following a three-year absence.

The Great Western Grill at Bovey Castle in Dartmoor is set to welcome guests once again following a £1.2m investment into the kitchen and new guest areas, with the restaurant officially opening on Friday, June 30.

The new menu is inspired by British comfort food and forgotten classics, offering traditional favourites, meats and grills, steaks, house specials, and fish and shellfish, as well as vegan and vegetarian options, whilst its popular Sunday roasts are also returning.

Led by executive chef Mark Budd, dishes have been prepared using high-quality locally-sourced ingredients, from Dartmoor beef wellington, Devon Wagyu beef burger, and Brixham crab cannelloni, to venison from the Bovey estate – showcasing the very best of British cuisine.

The 3AA Rosette restaurant also includes a stylish new Champagne and Oyster Bar offering an impressive selection of drinks including exclusive Champagnes, wines, and house cocktails, as well as Exmoor caviar and oysters served ‘theatre style’ in front of guests.

The restaurant’s Art Deco décor echoes a bygone era which pays homage to the hotel’s history, having originally been built by the WH Smith family in 1907 and later launched as a hotel by the Great Western Railway in 1930.

General Manager Dean Gunston said: “We are really excited to be opening The Great Western Grill at Bovey Castle and can’t wait for people to come and see the new look.

“We pride ourselves on providing local, sustainable and delicious food which showcases the best of British and demonstrates the skills and the knowledge of our talented kitchen and food and beverage teams.

“There’s something for everyone on the new menu and we are also really pleased to bring back our popular Sunday lunches after demand too, as well as keeping the much-loved Afternoon Teas on the menu on Sundays.”

Bovey Castle was acquired by the award-winning Eden Hotel Collection in 2014, and has since won numerous awards including 5 AA Red Stars in 2017 for its exceptional hospitality – the AA’s highest possible accolade.

With its rich history, effortless charm and neo-Jacobean architecture, the Grade II-listed hotel is one of Devon’s most iconic buildings and offers 60 bedrooms throughout the historic manor and beautiful courtyard, along with 22 self-catering country lodges tucked away within 275 acres of beautiful British countryside in Dartmoor National Park.

It also features Smith’s Brasserie, an 18-hole golf course which has been named one of the top 100 golf courses in Britain, tennis courts, and the Elan Spa, while on-site experiences include falconry, archery, cider and sloe gin-making and 4×4 off-road driving.
