You never know what the weather will do at the end of October, it could be lovely enough to enjoy some wonderful family walks and bike rides, or it might send us running for cover!
Just in case, here we look at some of the superb Family Attractions on and around Dartmoor that can provide fun for the family indoors over Half Term.
Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre, Lifton
The Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre is proud to present the National Fairground Collection. It is a facility unique in the UK, designed to capture the magic of a bygone age through exhibits, vintage engineering and stunning artwork displays. The Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre is a 45,000 square foot indoor attraction that provides a unique opportunity to view our Fairground Heritage in a beautiful rural location.
The cafeteria, open all day, is housed in a beautifully converted barn, full of character, along with a gift shop. Entrance to the cafeteria and shop is free and we welcome visitors who just wish to use these facilities.
House of Marbles, Bovey Tracey
Four museums, marble –runs, funfair mirrors, glassblowing, games garden, fully licensed eatery and a gift shop full of gorgeous gifts will keep the everyone in the family happy. The marble museum will tell you more about the worldwide phenomena that many of us as have known and loved over the years. Childhood memories flood back in the games museum and you will relish in the history of the Pottery site browsing the large collection dating back to as early as the 1700’s. Take a walk through time as you relish in the history waiting to be discovered.

Riverside Mill houses the largest contemporary crafts venue in the South West, with galleries, craft shop and popular café with terrace views. Entry is free. The shop displays a wide variety of hand-made crafts including ceramics, jewellery, textiles, furniture, prints and woodwork by its 240 local Guild Members. The exhibition galleries hold a regularly changing programme featuring exciting work by contemporary designer-makers from all over the UK.
Museum of Dartmoor Life, Okehampton
Situated within a cobbled courtyard next door to the White Hart Hotel, Okehampton, the Museum of Dartmoor Life exhibits over three floors a vast collection of objects spanning 5,000 years of life on Dartmoor from the Bronze Age through to the mid-20th Century. Together with providing the Tourist Information Point for Okehampton, Northern Dartmoor and beyond, the museum is a busy place with a variety of activities going on.
Dart Rock Climbing Centre, Buckfastleigh
Dart Rock climbing Centre is a state of the art bright and friendly indoor climbing wall with extensive bouldering and roped climbing. A safe and inviting environment suitable for climbers of all abilities, from the first tentative steps to super hard dedicated climbers. Dart Rock is the climbing company you want to climb with! Climb with us indoors or get outside on one of our outdoor climbing courses and bespoke sessions, we are also more than just climbing! South Devon Railway, Buckfastleigh
The South Devon Railway runs along the stunning valley of the River Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes Riverside, stopping halfway at Staverton and passing through glorious scenery, rich in wildlife. The steam trains offer a wonderful all day, all weather attraction for families and visitors of all ages.
As well as the steam train ride, there is loads to see and do at Buckfastleigh, with beautiful gardens, a riverside picnic area, museum, workshop and refreshment rooms, plus a great gift shop with a superb selection of souvenirs and model railway items. On certain days, the miniature railway and garden railway at Buckfastleigh are also running.
