Wonderful opportunity for families and groups to enjoy Countryside Discovery through the John Muir Scheme at Tor Royal Farm inside Dartmoor National Park.
The John Muir Award encourages people of all backgrounds to connect with, enjoy and care for wild places. It is an environmental award scheme focused on wild places. It is inclusive, accessible and non-competitive, though it should challenge each participant. The Award encourages awareness and responsibility for the natural environment through a structured yet adaptable scheme, in a spirit of fun, adventure and exploration.
Justine Colton at Tor Royal Farm offers families and groups the opportunity to take part in the scheme – “The scheme has four targets (which are repeated at different levels – Justine is offering the Discovery level) Discover, Explore, Conserve, Share – (all aimed at families with any age children, or groups) –
Discover – Justine will be offering the opportunity to learn about this part of Dartmoor for the Discover section.
Explore – This would be a guided walk and talk over the area we farm.
Conserve – Activities would be anything along the lines of planting a few tree whips, mending a wall, picking up litter, making insect hotels, bracken bashing etc.
Share – As the days progress we encourage details, photos etc to be shared, either through social media or going home and giving a talk to their school or club.
At the end of the 4 days, I sign the participants off and they are sent a certificate from the John Muir trust (as long as they complete the challenge).
Families and groups have the option of staying at Tor Royal Farm either in the farmhouse or out in the Bell Tents. There’s no charge for the John Muir Award training activities.
I am also offering Honeybee Experiences at our Dartmoor Hill Farm which would be a couple of hours for groups up to 4 again for people staying or not.”
