“ I have never before, in my long and eclectic career, been gifted with such an abundance of natural beauty as I experienced filming War Horse on Dartmoor.” Steven Spielberg.
Whether you are looking for an exhilarating walk or a gentle meander through the forest, Bellever can cater for every ability. Choose from one of the way marked walking trails or join the historic bridleway, The Lych Way. There are also numerous archaeological sites to discover as you explore Bellever – why not try the History Hunters trail, brought to life by the Moor Than Meets the Eye project?
Bellever also has a fascinating range of wildlife, including Dartmoor ponies. The Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust is a registered charity dedicated to the preservation of the Dartmoor pony breed. Their pedigree and approved heritage Dartmoor ponies graze the forest, helping to keep the vegetation down and create diverse grassland areas for wildlife. It is important to keep all gates shut in order to prevent cross-breeding with ponies from the surrounding area. Please do not feed the ponies.
There are two bridleways running through the forest and horse riders are welcome on the surfaced forest roads.
Camping and overnight sleeping is not allowed in the forest. Find a campsite for your needs on Dartmoor HERE.
